How to Build a Sustainable Wardrobe Without Sacrificing Style

Are you trying to dress more sustainably?

By now, you’ve probably heard that the fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to the global climate crisis. It’s responsible for the majority of microplastics in our environment and a massive amount of water pollution. Pretty overwhelming, right?

But here’s the good news: you don’t need to overhaul your entire closet to start making a difference. Small, intentional choices can have a big impact when we become more informed consumers.

Hi, I’m Erin — Holistic Style Coach & Personal Stylist Based in Austin, TX

I help people elevate their style in a way that’s intentional, sustainable, and uniquely them. And today, I’m excited to walk you through my personal Sustainable Wardrobe Hierarchy—a tool I use with clients to help guide mindful style decisions.

Once we’ve laid the foundation, I’ll show you how I styled 4 complete outfits from thrifted, upcycled, and sustainable pieces—each one inspired by characters from White Lotus, Season 3.

The Sustainable Wardrobe Hierarchy

This is my go-to guide for building a more planet-friendly closet:

  1. Wear What You Already Own
  2. Share (hello, clothing swaps!)
  3. Buy Second-Hand
  4. Shop from Ethical & Sustainable Brands

Let’s break each one down.

1. Wear What You Already Own

This is the most sustainable thing you can do—and also the most overlooked. But let’s be honest, it can feel a little boring.

So how do we bring life back to what’s already hanging in our closets?

Get creative with styling!
We often get stuck wearing clothes the way we bought them or the way they were styled in-store. But fashion should be fun!

Throw on your favorite playlist, pour a glass of wine, and play dress-up. Try weird combos. Layer unexpected pieces. No one needs to see it but you—unless it’s amazing, then definitely show the world.

Repair and Remake

So many of us have pieces we don’t wear just because they’re missing a button or need a quick hem fix. Invest in a basic sewing kit and learn a few simple repairs. Or find someone local who can help.

Want to go a step further? Upcycle!
If you have a vision, a tailor can help. If you want help imagining the possibilities, a designer or sewist (hi, that’s me!) can reimagine it with you.

2. Share: Clothing Swaps = Style Magic

One of the easiest (and most fun) ways to refresh your wardrobe sustainably is to swap clothes with friends. Host a party, trade pieces, or check out local community swaps. It’s like shopping—without the price tag or the environmental impact.

3. Buy Second-Hand

Second-hand shopping is not only sustainable, it’s stylish AF.

Whether it’s vintage, consignment, or thrift, second-hand fashion keeps clothes in circulation and out of landfills. And when you shop at local nonprofit stores like (my personal favorites) Austin Pets Alive or Top Drawer Thrift, your money also supports your community.

4. Shop Smart: Choose Ethical & Sustainable Brands

Sometimes buying new is necessary—and that’s okay. The key is knowing how to spot genuine sustainability versus clever marketing.

Greenwashing happens when companies present themselves as eco-friendly without offering real transparency or action. Thankfully, truly sustainable brands are open about their sourcing, labor practices, and environmental impact.

Two great tools to help you research brands before you buy:

Use them to make informed, intentional choices!

White Lotus-Inspired Sustainable Outfits

Now for the fun part—styling the outfits!

Each look is built mostly from pieces that have been thrifted, upcycled, or sourced from genuinely sustainable brands. I’ll be completely transparent about anything that was purchased new.
