Spring Closet Cleanout: How I Refresh My Wardrobe as a Personal Stylist

Is your closet a hellscape you dread entering?

If stepping into your wardrobe feels overwhelming or uninspiring, trust me—your style is suffering. A cluttered closet doesn’t just slow you down when you’re getting dressed; it blocks your creativity, your confidence, and your ability to express who you are.

But here’s the good news: with a regular closet cleanout, your wardrobe can become a space that energizes you, sparks inspiration, and makes getting dressed something you actually look forward to.

Twice a year—once in the spring and once in the fall—I do a deep-dive closet cleanout to stay aligned with my evolving style, lifestyle, and energy. Today, I’m walking you through my process.

If you’re trying to find clarity in your wardrobe, this method will help you reset with purpose.

Step 1: Get Inspired With a Pinterest Board

Before I even open the closet door, I take a moment to check in with myself. While I have some core elements I always love, my style evolves just like I do. So before each cleanout, I start by creating a Pinterest board that reflects how I want to dress right now.

I don’t overthink it. I pin emotionally—whatever speaks to me in the moment. Once I have around 20 pins, I step back and ask a few key questions:

  • What are the common themes?
  • What colors am I drawn to?
  • What silhouettes keep showing up?

This little exercise gives me a visual compass for what’s resonating with me stylistically. Here are some screenshots of the Pinterest board I put together for Spring 2025.

My Spring Style Mood

Here’s what came through in my spring board this year:

  • Textures & Details: Crochet in fun colors, floral prints, sheer fabrics
  • Shapes & Fit: Slouchy, oversized pants mixed with pieces that are nipped at the waist or midriff-baring
  • Color Palette: Creamy whites, soft pinks, and every shade of green

Step 2: Check In With What I Know About Myself

I always pair my current inspiration with knowledge I already have about myself—because style is a blend of evolution and self-awareness.

Color Notes:

  • I’ll wear almost any color if the outfit feels like me, but I look best in medium to dark blues, warm reds, saturated pinks, and fresh yellow-greens.
  • I avoid pastels and cool-toned shades near my face, unless I balance them out with a lot of blush.
  • Colors I’m currently obsessed with: butter yellow, powder blue, and chartreuse.

Silhouette Preferences:

  • I feel best in pieces that highlight my waist.
  • I love baring my shoulders and wearing maxi skirts.
  • I avoid spaghetti straps, shapeless oversized pieces, and anything that hits mid-calf (it’s a proportion thing!).

Step 3: Into the Closet We Go

Once I’ve done the inner (and Pinterest) work, I head into the closet. I pull all of my summer clothes to the front and start organizing by color. I usually begin with whatever color I’m most excited about—this time, it’s red.

Then I go item by item, asking one powerful question:
Does this still feel like me?

This part becomes so much easier when I’ve already done the prepwork. I’m not making decisions in a vacuum—I have a clear vision and framework guiding me.

Step 4: What to Do With the “No’s”

When I decide something no longer belongs in my closet, I don’t just toss it in a pile. I follow a simple closet cleanout flowchart to determine what happens next—donate, resell, repurpose, or archive.

What’s Next?

Next week on the blog, I’ll share the final version of my spring/summer closet, the items I decided to let go of, and what’s on my wishlist for the warmer months ahead. 🌼

Until then, stay sustainable, intentional, and uniquely you.
